Regulated by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners and required to obtain recertification every 5 years from continuing education or exam, and they must obtain recertification every 10 years by exam.
Required to work within a code of professional conduct and are subject to disciplinary action.

Required to sit for board certification and are well versed within the following disciplines surrounding breasfeeding: anatomy, physiology/endocrinology, nutrition/biochemistry, immunology/infectious disease, pathology, pharmacology/toxicology, psychology/sociology/anthropology, growth/development, interpretation of research, ethical/legal issues, breastfeeding equipment/tech, techniques and public health. (8 college level health professional courses/14 academic credits, 90hrs lactation specific education, 300-1000 clinical practice hours, ending with board certification)
